$1.2M NSF Grant Awarded to Lewis U Team

The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program provides funding to institutions of higher education to provide scholarships, stipends, and programmatic support to recruit and prepare STEM majors and professionals to become K-12 teachers. The program seeks to increase the number of K-12 teachers with strong STEM content knowledge who teach in high-need school districts.

PIs Dr. Dorene Huvaere (Education), Dr. Teresa Bixby (Chemistry), and Dr. Marie Meyer (Math) were awarded a $1.2M Track 1 grant in the spring of 2023. The proposed program, Commitment to the Preparation of STEM Educators (COMPOSE), focuses on enriching the academic, field, and clinical experiences with intentional instruction in culturally responsive teaching practices, experience in high-needs classrooms, disciplinary research support, a robust community of practice and mentoring program. Scholars will receive up to $24,000 in tuition support, funds for summer research and conference travel, professional development opportunities, and mentoring support through their first year of teaching.
