Dr. Teresa J Bixby
Professor of Chemistry
Assistant Vice Provost for Assessment and Educational Effectiveness

Dr. Bixby is a Professor of Chemistry and has been teaching at Lewis University since 2012. She leads the assessment efforts for the Department of Chemistry and has served on College and University assessment committees. In 2020 she started half-time as the Director of University Assessment and in 2024 she was named the Assistant Vice Provost of Assessment and Educational Effectiveness.

She serves Iota Sigma Pi, the National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry, as the Membership Affairs Coordinator for the Chicagoland Chapter, AuI, and as the Web Administrator for National Council.

In 2024 she was selected for a 3-year term on the Steering Committee of The POGIL Project.

Dr. Bixby is an NSF ASCEND Faculty Fellow (Advancing STEM Careers by Empowering Network Development, https://wou.edu/ascend/2019/).

Research Interests: An ultrafast laser spectroscopist by training, she now works in chemical education research, and with analytical methods for environmental chemistry applications. â€‹

Research Interests

Improving Retention and STEM Identity

Mixed methods are used to assess mindset, STEM identity, community and belonging,  and the efficacy of CURE curricula.

Construction of Analytical Instruments Using 3D-Printed Parts

3D printing has opened low-cost avenues for the construction of analytical instruments. From scaffolded instruction in Instrumental Analysis to the construction of an RAE ellipsometer for research use, 3D printing makes these projects accessible to undergraduates.

Process Skills ("Soft Skills")

The development and use of measurement tools with the NSF-IUSE ELIPSS Project allows for targeted and timely feedback to students to improve their skills.
