Assessment

As the Director of University Assessment for Lewis University, I push for stepping away from assessment as compliance and moving toward authentic assessment. Faculty ownership and agency are key to a meaningful assessment plan, and I work collaboratively to support programs in their efforts.

Tree

Our Assessment Handbook is a living document where faculty and staff are provided an overview of the basics of assessment, the structures and mechanisms of assessment at Lewis, and links to information and resources.

Assessment of Ethical Reasoning

A project in three parts with the aim of assessing Ethical Reasoning across the University. Led by a team of faculty from the Philosophy and Theology Departments, common assignments for General Education courses undergo juried assessment. Assessment at the mastery level will require identification of discipline-based ethics courses and collaboration with faculty.

General Education Assessment

In the first earnest effort to assess the General Education Program, teams of domain experts were assembled for each of the 6 general education domains. Following the definition of domain learning outcomes, each domain is assessing at least one outcome each academic year.

Culture of Assessment

A long-term goal is to cultivate the culture of assessment at the University so that:

  • everyone shares the responsibility of assessment.

  • assessment work is communicated openly.

  • assessments are authentic and lead to continuous improvement.
